Just outside of Chiang Mai, we went to a tiger sanctuary. These facilities are very controversial and opponents argue that they incentivize the illicit trade and trafficking of these awesome animals. Some people say they are drugged to remain calm for tourists and kept in conditions that are not proper for such a wild animal.
The prices are quite expensive by Thailand standards, so the motivation to procure more tigers by any means necessary is strong. Proponents argue that this is a sanctuary that protects tigers from the black market and that the high prices ensure they receive the best care. For tourists like us, it is rare chance to get so close to these beautiful animals.
Back in town, we spent the afternoon wandering around and visiting the many Wats (or Temples) scattered about. These temples were busy preparing for the festivities of Loi Krathong and Yi Peng, which they celebrate with floating offerings on the river and releasing lighted lanterns into the sky.
At night there was a parade through the city streets made up of dozens of colorful and festive floats.
