As I explained in a previous post, the camp is our communal home for volunteers and interns who are in Jaipur from all over the world. Most rooms have two bunk beds for 4 people and an attached bathroom. There are staff who look after the house and prepare our meals too. There are several commons areas where we can all hang out and relax.
The pic above is us on the rooftop – a very popular place to relax. The volunteers and interns are from Germany, Finland, Switzerland, Mexico, Australia, Ireland, Canada, Sweden and the U.S.
Volunteers stay anywhere from 2 weeks to over a year and volunteer and intern in many different capacities – teaching, women’s rights, yoga, cooking or Hindi lessons (like myself) to name some. We eat breakfast together on the level of the house below the rooftop, head out to our various classes/work places and come back to eat dinner together at camp.
After dinner, groups hang out in the commons or rooftop before going out to the handful of clubs/bars around town. One night, we set up a beer pong tournament in the dining area.
Some nights, instead of dinner at camp, we head out to a restaurant.
Since everyone is staying for a different time period in Jaipur, someone is always saying goodbye as new people arrive at least once a week. The goodbyes are very sad as people become fast friends living, working, eating and playing together.
Many nights, we hang out on the rooftop of camp with some beverages before piling into tuk-tuks together to head out into town.
