We woke up early in Picton to catch the interislander ferry across the Cook Strait to Wellington, which is the capital of New Zealand.
We parked our jucy van in the huge ferry and made our way to the top deck for some breakfast. The commons areas were full of people and we discovered for only $20 more (both tickets for the ferry and car cost $250) you can get a comfortable private cabin with a bed, bathroom and cappuccino. It was well worth it and we relaxed and took a nap for most of the journey. We drove off the ferry and into Wellington.
It was windy and cloudy – a perfect day for a museum. Wellington has the best museum in the country – Te Papa or Museum of New Zealand. This is a wonderfully informative museum and it’s free!
Inside there were countless exhibits about the Maori, natural history and colonial history to name a few.
After the museum, we checked out a small market nearby and found a pub to relax. Wellington’s rugby team was playing a match in the stadium against Sydney and we watched the game at the bar.
Our only long sleeve warm weather clothes are ‘Australia’ hoodies we got in Sydney. We took these off since the local team in NZ was playing a team from Oz. Since parking is limited in Wellington (the north island has far more people than the south), we drove a little outside the city to Lower Hutt and found a hotel there.
Out hotel room was directly above the bar, so we went down and hung out for a bit. A couple local rugby teams parked their buses out front and the place got busy real quick.
