Valentine’s Day

Oh man, I dropped the ball on this one. While planning our honeymoon, I didn’t think anything of spending the night of February 14th in the Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) of Kuala Lumpur Airport.

We said goodbye to Palawan and boarded our flight to Manila

ZestAir is now owned by AirAsia, which is a godsend for backpackers in Asia. It’s a Malaysian-based airline that mostly flew in Southeast Asia in the beginning. With a great reputation for service and cost, it has expanded rapidly throughout the rest of Asia, adding India, Korea, Japan, and Australia to it’s routes. In order to gain a market in the Philippines, AirAsia simply purchased ZestAir, which was already flying all over the country.

Back in Manila, we went to the Makati area, which has Manila’s gleaming and modern malls

We settled on Chili’s for our Valentine’s day dinner. For some reason, all the staff were dressed up as fairytale characters.

Remember it’s Valentine’s day, not Halloween. Next we were off to the airport for our flight to Kuala Lumpur. This is the one catch of AirAsia – many flights take you through the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur (or KL for short). Many times, these flights get in late and the connecting flight doesn’t leave until very early the next morning. This means its not really worth it to try and go into the city and sleep. You just have to tough it up and make do with the terminal. This is our second time doing this and it doesn’t get easier – on top of this, it is Valentine’s day.

Manila-Yangon2

After a terrible attempt at getting any sleep, we boarded our 6:30am flight to Yangon, Myanmar – a new country for us!!! All the countries covered so far, Korea and Philippines, we have been to before on several occasions. Myanmar, is new to us, and here is our hotel room after sleeping (or trying to) in the airport on Valentine’s day.

Yangon, Myanmar

Myanmar DOES NOT have visa-on-arrival like several neighboring countries do (Thailand) so we had to apply for a tourist visa while we were still in Korea. It was a fairly simple process – we found a travel agency in Busan, filled out a few forms and paid them $60 for each visa. This company then sends off your forms and passport to the Myanmar embassy in Seoul.
